USA Travel By Train Tours
You have to dig a little deeper to find USA travel by train tours
than in Europe, but they are definitely available. There is a huge variety of scenery, from the fall colors of New England, to the majestic rocky mountains.
Throughout the US, many private lines have been maintained or rebuilt as privately owned, tour train travel lines, which occasionally connect to Amtrak or regional systems.
Discounts, Tips & Tricks
* When traveling on Amtrak, wait to pick up your ticket at the station until the day of travel to provide more flexibility for any change of plans or upgrades. You may be able to upgrade at a nice discount if the premium seats are still available on the day of your trip.
* Spring and fall provide the best combination of lower ticket prices and hours of daylight for viewing the scenery from the train. Peak travel periods are from April to September. The cost of rail passes and tickets will rise during these periods to reflect this. In the summer and around national holidays trains fill up much quicker. Consider an upgrade during peak periods as coach class passengers in particular will have less room to stretch out.
* Check out Amtrak's 'Hot Deals" page. Heavily discounted coach tickets are available for purchase for routes that have spare capacity over the next 30 - 60 days. 'Hot Deals' seats can not be upgraded at the time of purchase, however you may be able to upgrade once aboard the train.
